As promised boys, I wanted to provide you with the Regimen I believed would make me look like my High School Days.

Mr. Mans Handy Dandy List of Working Out:

  • Surfing 3x a week
  • Running 2x a week
  • Walking 5x a week
  • Tennis 2x a week
  • Push-ups: 50 a day
  • Crunches: 50 a day

So week 1 was upon us, I went surfing three times that week, took 1 walk, did about 50 push-ups, 0 crunches and I am not sure I even own a tennis racket.  Needless to say that wasn’t going to fly.

Just at that time, my fiancé came out of the back room dripping in sweat telling me not to look at her so she could run across the house to the shower.

That was when my moment of clarity hit.  I realized that when I am left to account for myself and take the initiative to exercise, 90% of the time I make an excuse on why I can’t do it and don’t.  Now if I include my wife in my plan and she doesn’t feel like exercising that day, I’m off the hook and don’t need to feel guilty about it because after all, I can’t argue with my wife!

The conversation that followed was amazing.

All I did was tell my finance that I would like to try and work out with her and she opened up like a book about how amazing this is going to be and how we can push each other through it, motivate each other when we are not feeling it and ultimately push each other to eat healthy. Wow, maybe my plan was about to backfire!

After the conversation we had the previous evening, I thought nothing of it the next day when after work I heard “You Ready” coming from the living room.  I strapped up my shoes, donned my best sleeveless shirt and marched into the living room ready for battle.  After all, this is a woman’s program I am about to embark on, so how difficult could it really be??

Hold the phone!!  After stopping a full 10 minutes prior to the end of the programs day 1 session and claiming “This is ludicrous, they’re going to hurt someone making them workout so hard!”, I decided I’m done, I’m going back to my old plan!  Although she didn’t say anything, the look of let-down on my wife’s face spoke a thousand words, but only two of which she was able to speak “I’m sorry”.

As I took my cool off shower, I was still mad as heck about how exhausted and “blown-up” I was from following a woman’s program on the TV.  The more I though about it, the madder I got until it hit me, I am not mad at the program…I realized I was upset with myself.

I was upset with myself because I let myself go for so many years that I couldn’t manage to make it through a 30 minute exorcise program using 5lb weights (shh!!).

1.22.13 Shape Up

The next day I woke up in so much pain that I had to hobble around the house and barely left the office except when necessary.  The end of the day came and this time, instead of waiting for my wife, I geared up, set up the living room and yelled to my wife “You Ready?”!

Those 1000 words of disappointment turned into 1000 expressions of joy and so we set out on Day 2.  I am not going to tell you that day 2 was any easier than day 1, or for that matter it if any day it got easier!   But every time I looked over at my wife and saw her pushing through the pain, it forced me to dig a little deeper.

Initially working out for me was to lose the weight I gained and make myself a little fitter.  Both of those goals were achieved.  What I did not expect to come out of exercising with my wife is the bond we formed.

We went into this separately, wound up meeting in the middle somehow and learned that we can count on one another for motivation, dedication and most importantly of all Inspiration.

We finished that “Extreme” workout and went on to using one more “Insane” program before our wedding, each of us accomplishing our goals set fourth in our minds.

So gentleman, next time you see your lovely bride-to-be busting her hump to try and look her best for you on your wedding day, consider joining along and busting yours.  Don’t just do it for the wedding, but do it for each other.  The time you put in now may reward you in your twilight years.

Smile and Breath Boys, you can do it!
