Ideas to Help Be the Best ‘Best Man’ You Could Be: Part 2

3.13.13 Mr Man Pic 1Welcome back gentleman, I initially thought I could get out all my points in one Blog, boy was I way wrong!  Picking back up where we left off:

#3 – Transportation To and From the Wedding

Here is where you get the chance to be in charge and show everyone who’s really boss!  You have a watch that is set 5 minutes early on your left wrist and a foot that’s tapping time to The Ramones.

You, my friend, have places to be or more importantly someone who must be there on time!  You can be late the rest of your life and no one would notice, but make your best buddy late for his own wedding and you can count on hearing about it every time over his new nest, whether invited or not.

Limos

Now the flip side (after the wedding) is just as important.  I am fortunate to get 2 weeks off a year for vacation; most likely the same applies to your happily wedded friends and with business being business these days, you are only allowed to take 5 days off in a row at a time.

Here is where you are important.  I am sure things went as planned in your speech – Way to go Buddy!! (Don’t worry; we will get to the best man speech in another post, I promise), But now you have a job to do.  You have to do what to some may seem like a daunting task: Be pleasant and drive a very hung over happily married couple to the airport.

One last time you get to flex your Timex muscle and be in charge…only this time I suggest you do some planning ahead and have your car ready with bottled water and hot coffee: Trust me this will make for a better ride.

#4 – The Ring

This part is not so difficult for the best man unless he is like me and forgetful.  But in that case, most likely the groom already knows this and will only place the ring in your possession seconds before the ceremony starts.

Rings

The hard part for you here is to stop twiddling the ring during the ceremony; you don’t want that thing falling out of your pocket…I’m sure there’s some superstition surrounding such an event!

You have nothing to worry about with the ring; all you have to do is present it to the master of ceremonies when no one is looking.

#5 – The Tip

Now I wanted to address this because I have been receiving questions regarding the matter.  In the part of the country where I originate from, everything is done for a tip and it is in your face all the time: convenient stores, donut shops, I even saw a tip jar at a for-profit newspaper stand (Yes–think about it).

So naturally when I think of an event, I automatically add to the bottom line for tipping purposes.  Here you are held with the utmost responsibility, cash in pocket and the being the dispenser of the said cash.  It is your responsibility to monitor the room and be sure all the service arrangements are flowing.

As a suggestion, you should introduce yourself to the entertainment before things get under way, like the DJ or band, photo booth operator, photographer and bartender.  I would suggest letting them know you are the best man and if they have any issues to address you first before interrupting the hosts.

Don’t get me wrong this could go bad for some people.  I was at a wedding where the best man tipped everyone first before the wedding started and with about an hour left to go, 2 of the band members mysteriously disappeared.  Always be sure to use your judgment!

Thank you for stopping back this week.  Believe me when I say you don’t want to miss what I have in store for you for next weeks agenda!!   Stay tuned for Part 3….
